King Devanampiya Tissa

King Devanampiya Tissa was one of the greatest and most respected kings in the history of Sri Lanka. He ruled the country from Anuradhapura in the 3rd century BC. He is especially remembered for introducing Buddhism to Sri Lanka, which became a major turning point in the country’s history.

King Devanampiya Tissa was a close friend of Emperor Ashoka of India. Their friendship helped to strengthen the relationship between the two countries. Emperor Ashoka, who had embraced Buddhism, wanted to spread the teachings of the Buddha. Therefore, he sent his son, Arahat Mahinda Thero, to Sri Lanka.

The meeting between King Devanampiya Tissa and Arahat Mahinda Thero took place at Mihintale. This meeting is considered a very important event in Sri Lankan history. After listening to the teachings of Buddhism, the king accepted the new religion and became a devoted follower. As a result, Buddhism was officially introduced to Sri Lanka.

King Devanampiya Tissa supported the spread of Buddhism in many ways. He built temples and monasteries and offered land for religious activities. One of the most famous contributions during his reign was the establishment of the Mahavihara in Anuradhapura. He also welcomed Sangamitta Theri, the daughter of Emperor Ashoka, who brought the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree to Sri Lanka.

The reign of King Devanampiya Tissa was peaceful and prosperous. He ruled with kindness, wisdom, and justice. His efforts helped to shape the culture, religion, and traditions of Sri Lanka, which continue even today.
