King Dutugemunu
King Dutugemunu is one of the greatest and most respected kings in the history of Sri Lanka. He was a brave and powerful ruler who united the country and protected Buddhism. His life story is an inspiring example of courage, leadership, and patriotism.
King Dutugemunu was born in 161 BC as the son of King Kavantissa and Queen Viharamahadevi. From a young age, he showed great strength and determination. At that time, Sri Lanka was divided, and the northern part of the country was ruled by King Elara, a South Indian ruler.
Dutugemunu believed that the country should be united under one ruler. After his father’s death, he became king and began a great war against King Elara. With the support of his loyal army and ten great warriors, he fought many battles bravely. Finally, he defeated King Elara in a famous duel and united the whole country under his rule.
Although he was a strong warrior, King Dutugemunu was also kind and just. He respected King Elara even after defeating him and ordered that Elara be given a proper funeral. This shows his noble character and respect for his enemies.
King Dutugemunu is also remembered for his great service to Buddhism. He built many important religious monuments, including the Ruwanwelisaya Stupa in Anuradhapura, which is one of the most sacred places in Sri Lanka today.
In conclusion, King Dutugemunu was a heroic and noble king who played a major role in Sri Lankan history. His bravery, kindness, and dedication to religion made him a great leader. Even today, he is remembered with pride and respect by the people of Sri Lanka.
